7 Hawaiian Principles To Change Your Life, No. 7: Wisdom

Text from the series “Holistic Healing Chronicles: Nourishing Your Body, Mind, and Soul for Lasting Wellness” by Nisarga Eryk Dobosz.

Greetings to all fellow seekers of healing and self-discovery!

Life unfolds with endless possibility. It offers numerous paths, teachings, and approaches to attain the ultimate states of happiness, love, and bliss. Amidst this vast landscape, one may ponder the right path or seek the perfect formula. The answer lies in the seventh principle of Huna – the Hawaiian Philosophy – known as PONO – WISDOM, which translates to “effectiveness is the measure of truth.”

In our intricate tapestry of existence, there is no universal truth, no one-size-fits-all approach. Each of us is a complex marvel shaped by diverse experiences influenced by culture, age, and religion. I attribute a significant element of my personal growth to continuous learning. I am constantly exploring and studying various teachers and approaches for holistic healing of the body, mind, and spirit.

I am fascinated by recent revelations in the realms of trauma, bodywork, fascia, and the physiology of our central nervous system. Approaches from a decade ago, rooted in cathartic methods to release emotions, are now considered outdated. Our understanding of the nociception aspect of fascia and its impact on pain syndromes has expanded. The medical world is embracing holistic perspectives on pain and disease, with the dawn of new technologies and the implementation of AI marking just the beginning of profound discoveries in health and wellness.

The ultimate truth of health, peace, and love is a shared pursuit for all human beings, prompting many to embark on a spiritual journey to uncover their essence and peace of mind. Numerous paths lead to this destination, each uniquely tailored to individual gifts and qualities. For me, the gateway to spiritual awakening unfolded through the world of touch and embodiment, adopting a bottom-up, somatic therapy approach that embraced the forgotten language of my body as a fast track to presence and compassion.

That said, this avenue is not universal. Others may find their doors to spiritual awakening through psychotherapy and cognitive understandings. I would be cautious of anyone who claimed to have found the way home to the body. We are all a trinity of Body-Mind-Spirit, we all have diverse and bespoke starting points.

In my teachings, I stress that my knowledge and insights stem from my experiential journey over the past 25 years. I encourage my students to maintain a beginner’s mind, trusting this wisdom while understanding that my words are merely an expression of my personal understanding. The principle of Wisdom – PONO – cultivates humility and allows me to admit when I don’t know. It serves as a compass guiding individuals to express their unique gifts with acceptance and appreciation for the diverse talents of others.

I firmly believe in the perfect harmony of the universe, where each individual contributes to the fusion of imperfections, serving a unique purpose. Whenever judgment, blame, or criticism surfaces within me towards others, I recognize that I am off course, causing harm to myself and those around me. To realign myself, I turn to my inner compass of HUNA, contemplating the seventh principle, WISDOM.

I extend an invitation to borrow this compass and use it whenever needed to reconnect with your heart, understanding that Wisdom lies in accepting each individual’s unique journey toward the ultimate destination of Loving Presence.
