Text from the series “Holistic Healing Chronicles: Nourishing Your Body, Mind, and Soul for Lasting Wellness” by Nisarga Eryk Dobosz.
Greetings to all fellow seekers of healing and self-discovery!
In the spring of 2008, amidst the vibrant chaos of India, I embarked on a journey that would reshape the very essence of my being. With a one-way ticket from Delhi to Dharamsala, nestled in the serene Himalayas, I left behind the trappings of a corporate life in pursuit of something more profound. Driven by an inner calling to unravel the mysteries of existence, I sought answers to age-old questions: Who am I? What is my purpose? What is the meaning of life? Little did I know, this quest would lead me to meditation.
As a young and ambitious 30-year-old, I was eager to find quick solutions, impatient to unlock the secrets of enlightenment. Yet, as I embarked on my first 10-day retreat at a Buddhist center in Dharamsala, I was met with a stark realization: true awakening is not a destination but a journey inward.
Sitting in silent contemplation for hours on end, surrounded by fellow seekers, I confronted the turbulence of my own mind. The relentless chatter of thoughts, the discomfort of bodily sensations, and the weight of expectation bore down upon me. In those moments of inner turmoil, I grappled with my own inadequacies, berating myself for not measuring up to some imagined standard of perfection.
Yet, amidst the chaos of my own mind, a gentle voice emerged – the voice of the teacher. With compassion and wisdom, he offered me a simple yet profound truth: meditation is not about striving or competing but about surrendering and trusting in the unfolding of life.
With each passing day, I delved deeper into my own consciousness, peeling back the layers of conditioning and self-doubt. Through the practice of meditation, I discovered the art of being fully present – of embracing each moment with an open heart and clear mind.
I learned to observe the sensations of my body without judgment, to witness the ebb and flow of thoughts without attachment. In the stillness of meditation, I found refuge from the storms of life, a sanctuary where peace and tranquility reign supreme.
As I emerged from my retreat, I carried with me a newfound sense of clarity and purpose. In the bustling streets of McLeodganj, amidst the monasteries and temples, I continued my journey of self-discovery. Guided by the teachings of a wise monk, I embraced the six Rs of meditation:
Recognize the pattern
Release the past
Rejoice in the moment
Recenter with the self
Reconnect to the present
Repeat the cycle
This became my mantra for inner peace.
Today, as I invite you to join me on this journey within, I offer you a simple invitation: to be present, to be still, to be at peace. In the gentle rhythm of your breath, in the quiet stillness of your heart, may you find the true essence of who you are. For in the depths of meditation lies the key to awakening the true self. It is a journey of infinite possibility and boundless joy.
With heartfelt compassion and dedication,
