Text from the series “Holistic Healing Chronicles: Nourishing Your Body, Mind, and Soul for Lasting Wellness” by Nisarga Eryk Dobosz.
Greetings to all fellow seekers of healing and self-discovery!
Take a deep breath and anchor yourself in the present moment. This is what Presence is all about. In the rich tapestry of Hawaiian culture, it finds its roots in MANAWA, reminding us that “now is the moment of power.” But what does it really mean to be powerful?
Empowerment, in essence, is a declaration of our experience—a space where we can shoulder responsibility and respond to others without reactive impulses, without causing harm to ourselves or those around us. Presence emerges as the paramount quality for us, as humans, to nurture, fostering growth, expansion, and a peaceful, aligned life.
Pause for a moment and observe your breath. Dive into the rhythmic dance of life unfolding second by second. In this very moment, devoid of worries or issues, the past and future lose their grip. It’s when we wander into the realms of yesteryears or tomorrows that we grapple with concerns, play the victim, and yearn for external validation—missing out on the essence of life.
I often hear people say, “If only I had this status, were with that person, or had better health, I’d be happier.” We forget how inherently unique and perfect we are. Life unfolds with myriad opportunities for growth, with projects evolving as we traverse the mystery of existence. Yet, in our fixation on end results, anxiety about future outcomes, we overlook the significance of relishing the joy in each moment, savoring the beauty of life now.
Look around—life is adorned with mystery and magic. The daily spectacle of sunrise, sunsets, stars, trees, and the incredible diversity of human beings. And let’s not only focus on external beauty, too often we neglect the magic and sophistication within our very own bodies—a marvel in itself.
Presence and the acknowledgment of this moment are lifelines, especially during challenging times. Anchoring our experience in the present, focusing on our breath, observing sensations, meditating, and regulating our parasympathetic nervous system help navigate difficulties.
Our lives become richer when we consistently flex the muscle of presence, continually dropping back into the now and remembering the breath. This way of living transforms life into a fulfilled experience, a poetry and a miracle in which we discover the divine in the small things, imbuing profound meaning.
Without this ability of MANAWA, we merely exist—born and then gone—constantly entangled in worry about imaginary obstacles, often not even real. So, choose today to be in the moment, relish the beauty around you, and revel in the miracle of your life. We are divine beings, here to allow our souls to experience the material world. This, right now, is the moment of power!
