7 Hawaiian Principles To Change Your Life, No. 1: Awareness

Text from the series “Holistic Healing Chronicles: Nourishing Your Body, Mind, and Soul for Lasting Wellness” by Nisarga Eryk Dobosz.

Greetings to all fellow seekers of healing and self-discovery!

Huna philosophy has woven itself into the fabric of my being. It first unveiled its profound wisdom to me through the transformative embrace of Hawaiian Massage, Lomi Lomi Nui, back in 1999. Since that pivotal moment, my journey has been an immersive dance with the teachings of Huna, leading me through years of dedicated study and exploration. This odyssey of understanding reached its zenith when I visited Hawaii in 2019. There, I was granted the extraordinary privilege of studying with Kahunas, connecting with shamans, and absorbing the timeless wisdom of revered elders amidst the enchanting landscapes of Big Island and Kauai. This personal pilgrimage not only deepened my understanding of Huna but also left an indelible mark on how I perceive and approach life.

Together, I would like us to embark on an exploration of the seven Hawaiian Huna principles. I extend a heartfelt invitation to you to join me in unraveling the transformative power these principles hold, and discovering how they can orchestrate positive shifts in your own life.

The seven principles of Huna serve as guiding beacons:

  • IKE – AWARENESS – The world is what you think it is
  • KALA – FREEDOM – There are no limits, everything is possible
  • MAKIA – FOCUSING – Energy flows where attention goes
  • MANAWA – PRESENCE – Now is the moment of power
  • ALOHA – LOVE – To love is to be happy
  • MANA – STRENGTH – All power comes from within
  • PONO – WISDOM – Effectiveness is the measure of truth

Our journey into these principles begins with the first one, IKE, which encapsulates the essence of awareness. Let’s dive to the depths of this principle, and discover how cultivating awareness can be the key to unlocking profound transformation.

“IKE – Awareness”: “The world is what you think it is.” This powerful statement invites us to explore our own belief systems. We are all born as beings of pure love and consciousness. Each of us embarks on a unique journey as we grow-up in this world. We face a diverse range of experiences, some are enriching, nourishing and expand our capacity for joyous living. Others constrain our perspectives on life, abundance, and love. IKE illuminates the areas where we limit our full potential as human beings. Thriving in four major aspects of our lives, such as Health & Wellbeing, Family & Relationships, Wealth & Career, and Spirituality & Religion, leads to a state of deep fulfilment.

I believe that our human journey involves bringing awareness to limiting beliefs in these four aspects of life and shifting them to new beliefs aligned with our soul’s purpose and vision. Allow me to invite you to an experiment. Take a notebook and write down your belief system around these four topics: Health & Wellbeing, Family & Relationships, Wealth & Career, and Spirituality & Religion. Identify beliefs that help you thrive and those that limit your potential.

This initial step of recognition and self-inquiry is crucial. Armed with this wisdom, you are ready to embark on a journey of healing and transformation. Seek the right teachers and modalities to change your perspectives, always remembering that we have the choice to see life as a glass half full or half empty. Take full responsibility for creating your own universe. This journey is a continuous process of self-discovery and empowerment, and I am thrilled to guide you through it.
